Most of the activities take place on weekends with camps to the countryside, outdoor activity centres or military training camps. Expeditions with overnight camping are popular even though the cadets have to carry everything with them. They are also a requirement of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. During the expeditions the cadets develop their skills in navigation and campcraft, including cooking in the field, as well as increasing their fitness. The squadron is registered with the National Navigation Award Scheme for Bronze and Silver awards, so cadets can gain national qualifications in recognition of the skills they have learnt. Staff accompanying the cadets are qualified to BELA (Basic Expedition Leadership Award) standard and some have higher awards such as Mountain Leader. There are opportunities for senior cadets to gain these qualifications as well. Other activities include obstacle courses, where cadets get to climb, run, jump and swing over different obstacles as the military does in its training. Fieldcraft including emergency first aid, building shelters and camouflage and concealment is also taught to cadets by suitably qualified people (recently this has been carried out by RAF Regiment personnel who assist the squadron). More exciting activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, parachuting and canoeing are also on offer with special courses run each year. But whatever the activity the cadets have fun and gain memories that will last a lifetime.
