There are three ways that you can start instructing in the ATC. OFFICER The backbone of the ATC is staffed by officers of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training) branch. These officers hold Queen's commissions in the RAFVR, but do not hold war appointable posts. Only these members of staff can hold command resposibilities such as the commanding officer of a squadron. To become an officer in the RAFVR(T) you have to be between the ages of 20 and 50. Ex-servicemen and women may be already qualified to be appointed as a commisioned officer, while everyone else must serve a minimum time as a civilian instructor. NON COMMISSIONED OFFICER Adult NCOs have only recently come into being, adding the adult Sergeant and Flight Sergeant ranks to what was previously just Adult Warrant Officer. Again it is a uniformed post with no call up liability. To become a adult NCO in the ATC you have to be between the ages of 20 and 55. Ex-servicemen and women may be already qualified to be appointed as an adult NCO, while everyone else must serve a minimum time as a civilian instructor. CIVILIAN INSTRUCTOR Civilian instructors are mainly employed in the actual instruction of the cadets, either in the classroom or in the various activities that the ATC does in the great outdoors. To become a civilian instructor in the ATC you have to be over the age of 20.
All staff in the ATC have to undergo a security check due to the access to RAF installations given to them and an enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check for those working with young people. The ATC is an equal opportunity organisation, and so does not discriminate on grounds of race, sex or religion. Extensions to the age limited stated above can be made in special cases.
