The ATC has a classification based academic training system.  At each stage the cadets sit multiple choice exams to test their knowledge of the subjects taught.  Further details are given below.  Examples of the training manuals can be found at www.aircadets.org/acps.html.

The Classifications

No Badge

Junior Cadet/Second Class
This is the entry stage for all cadets.  They become 2nd class after being enrolled.  These cadets are working towards 1st class classification
 

First class

First Class
In order to gain their 1st class badge cadet must be proficient in the following subjects assessed practically or orally:

  • The Air Training Corps
  • The Royal Air Force
  • History of Flight
  • Map Reading
  • Airmanship 1
  • Communications
  • Initial Expedition Training
  • Drill
     

Leading

Leading
To gain their Leading cadet badge cadets must pass exams in the following subjects:

  • Airmanship 2
  • Basic Navigation
  • Principles of Flight

In addition cadet must complete 25 hours of project work.
 

Senior

Senior
To gain their Senior cadet badge cadets must pass exams in two of the subjects below.  They must also complete 25 hours of project work.

  • Air Navigation
  • Propulsion
  • Aircraft Handling
  • Advanced Radio & Radar
  • Pilot Navigation
  • Airframes
  • Operational Flying
  • Satellite Communications

 

Staff Lanyard

Staff
To gain their staff cadet lanyard cadets must pass exams in two of the subjects not taken at senior cadet level.  They must also complete 25 hours of project work and pass an oral exam with a Wing Staff Officer.
